Shwu-Maan Lee serves as a senior program officer in the Research and Development Unit, overseeing process development and manufacturing activities to support vaccine development efforts.
Shwu-Maan comes to MVI with more than 25 years of industry experience, most recently as the Director of Technical Affairs at Baxter BioScience. While at Baxter, she was awarded five times for her work on the Hib vaccine, Mening C vaccine, polysaccharide purification technology platform, novel semi-synthetic conjugate vaccines, and for using high-end technology in NeisVacC™ manufacturing investigation. Under her leadership, her team developed the commercial purification process for Certiva™ (a protein-based DTaP vaccine ). Her team also developed the commercial purification process for NeisVac-C ™ (a polysaccharide-protein conjugate). In addition to leading process development activities, she served previously as Director of Quality Control and Analytical Operations at Baxter, where she managed the assay development, process development, and clinical production of several conjugate vaccines. From 2005 to 2010, she provided technical support to vaccine manufacturing, quality, and regulatory groups. From 2010 to 2013, she successfully transferred NeisVac-C™ from Maryland to Austria.
Shwu-Maan received her BS in agricultural chemistry from National Taiwan University. She also received an MS in organic chemistry and a PhD in biological chemistry from the University of Illinois at Chicago. In addition, she conducted her post-doctoral work in molecular biology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
