The next generation of malaria vaccines would aim to reduce transmission of the parasite.

In addition to the goal of developing and licensing a first-generation vaccine, the global malaria vaccine community envisions a longer-term goal of progressive malaria elimination and eventual eradication.
The community's Malaria Vaccine Technology Roadmap, which provides guidance for developing highly efficacious malaria vaccines, calls for the development of vaccines that reduce transmission of malaria parasites (both P. falciparum and P. vivax) and that substantially reduce the incidence of malaria infection.
